Brilliant Competition at the ALOHA National Championship

By Laura Maestre, ALOHA Coordinator at Caxton College in Valencia

On Saturday, 6 September, Madrid was the meeting point for young talents from all over Spain at the ALOHA Mental Arithmetic National Championship. This event brings together children with a shared goal: to demonstrate their excellent arithmetic skills.

Among the participants were several students from Caxton College, who not only represented us with great enthusiasm but also embodied the values of effort and perseverance. For their teachers, watching them in action was a source of pride, because each of them reflected the spirit of self-improvement that characterises our students.

The championship consisted of a very demanding test requiring them to solve 70 operations in just five minutes. Our students courageously accepted the challenge and showed that, regardless of the final results, just the experience of participating in a competition of this level is a huge achievement. Being able to overcome the obstacles of time restraint, an auditorium full of participants and the excitement of the moment is an experience that will benefit them in future challenges they take on.

We want to give a huge congratulations to Javier B (Year 3) and Hugo R (Year 4), who showed an admirable ability to concentrate and successfully complete such a challenging test.

But we are especially pleased to commend Nacho G (Year 3) because, after winning an international award last year, he surpassed himself again this year and won the title of Spanish Champion!

Nacho competed in the Tiny Tots 3 category alongside children aged between 7 and 10 from all over Spain and managed to solve all 70 operations before the five minutes were up! A brilliant result that places him among the best in the country and reflects his incredible effort and dedication.

The ALOHA teachers, beyond the medals and trophies, would like to recognise the dedication of all of our participating students. We want to emphasise that having such an enriching experience first-hand, sharing it with other students from different places and demonstrating what they’ve learnt in such a motivating environment is, in itself, a triumph.
