Exploring Preparedness: First Aid and the Duke of Edinburgh Journey at Caxton College

By Bjorn Rose, DofE Coordinator at Caxton College in Valencia

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an expedition into personal growth and resilience, where challenges become opportunities.

Recognising that the very nature of exploration brings with it the potential for the unexpected, we've recently amplified the role of first aid training across all DofE levels. Equipping our students with fundamental life-saving skills isn't just a safety measure; it's a crucial element of their preparedness and responsibility.

Our enhanced training delves into the vital primary survey, guiding students to systematically assess any medical emergency using the DR ABC framework: ensuring Danger is managed, checking for Response, securing the Airway, verifying Breathing, and assessing Circulation. This foundational knowledge then leads to practical skills in managing common expedition incidents, from providing initial support for breaks and controlling bleeds, to understanding the treatment of burns.

Central to this training is the life-saving technique of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). We believe every student should feel empowered to act decisively in a cardiac emergency, and our comprehensive instruction provides them with the necessary skills and confidence. To bolster this commitment, Caxton College has invested in new and improved first aid equipment and training materials, ensuring our students learn with the most up-to-date resources.

Looking to the horizon of safety and preparedness, we are actively exploring the inclusion of one pocket-sized Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for use on our field expeditions. This portable device offers the potential to significantly improve outcomes in the event of a cardiac arrest, representing a bold step in our commitment to the wellbeing of our students as they navigate their DofE journey.

Integrating thorough first aid training into our DofE programme is more than just meeting a requirement. It's about fostering a mindset of preparedness, cultivating responsibility for oneself and others, and ultimately, enriching the exploratory spirit of the Award with a foundation of safety and capability. We are excited about this evolution and the empowering impact it will have on our students' DofE experiences.
