One School, One Community: Celebrating Respect and Inclusion Week

By Jason Philip and Carla Denecker, Deputy and Assistant Pastoral Heads in Secondary

At Caxton College, diversity isn’t just a buzzword; it is the heartbeat of our community. This past week, Secondary was filled with a shared sense of purpose as we celebrated Respect and Inclusion Week, a vital highlight in our school calendar that allows us to reflect on the wonderful tapestry of cultures and perspectives that make us unique.

Leading the Way through Reflection

In line with our school's purpose to 'Lead the Way,' students across all year groups engaged in activities designed to engender equality and respect.

Years 7 to 11 attended morning assemblies in the Theatre, exploring the many ways in which we are unique and discussing how to show respect and tolerance toward our differences.
Year 12 and 13 students focused on the future during dedicated registration-time presentations, where they explored the intersection of leadership and inclusion.

A central theme this year was the concept of the 'Upstander.' Students looked at practical ways to show kindness and support to others in the face of unfair treatment, learning that building an inclusive community requires active participation and courage.

Finding a Voice: The House Speechwriting Competition

One of the most moving aspects of the week was the launch of a House Speechwriting Competition for Year 7 and 8 students. Aimed at showcasing our younger students’ perspectives, entrants were asked to tackle two powerful themes: 'Proud to Be Me' or 'What Equality Means to Me.'

A Community United

Of course, it wouldn't be a Caxton event without a bit of healthy competition! House points were up for grabs throughout the week, not only via the speechwriting contest but also through an engaging tutor-time quiz that tested students' knowledge of global diversity and inclusion.

Our concept of 'One School, One Community' is at the heart of everything we do. Events like Respect and Inclusion Week play a vital role in reasserting this value, ensuring that every individual at Caxton College feels seen, heard, and valued.

We have greatly enjoyed reading the moving entries from our students and look forward to sharing some of their inspiring speeches with you soon.

Together, we continue to lead the way in kindness, respect, and unity.
