What Brings Me Joy

By Xander C, Year 8 student at Caxton College in Valencia

When I first saw the topic about the Verse competition to celebrate World Book Day, I thought, what could I write about that brings me joy? And I put a lot of thought into this. Then I wondered, what about reading? I had never thought of books and reading as something that brought me joy, it was just an activity I love doing. So, I decided to write about it, realising that an activity I love doing actually brings me a lot of joy. This poem was the product of this realisation.

Pages rustling, paper crinkling.
The smell of a fresh book,
Sleep waits, for just one more chapter.
One more, then somehow ten,
How did I get here again?

The faint feeling of worn papers,
Walking a thousand miles without moving,
Living a million years without aging.
Stepping into the life of others.

Solving mysteries that don't exist,
Taking adventures in other worlds,
Books allow one to live hundreds of lifetimes…
In one.

One good book can completely change the world,
And one book can take someone on an adventure,
An adventure that will never be forgotten.
A journey that can teach you anything.

The sensation of losing oneself in another place,
Another world,
Where one can follow someone's voyage.
Where one can enjoy a moment of
Magic
Books feel like magic in real life.

This brings me joy.
