We interviewed Elea G and Arnau B, Year 5 students who have been selected as the Fallera Mayor and President of the Caxton College Falla this year and who will be accompanied by a wonderful Corte de Honor made up by their classmates. They have opened their hearts to tell us what the festival means to them, how they felt when their names were drawn, and what their ideal monument would be.
How long have you been falleros?
Elea: Well, when my mother was pregnant with me, she was already thinking about me being a fallera, so I was signed up even before I was born.
Arnau: Same for me; my mother was a fallera and the day before I was born, she signed me up to the falla too.
Which falla do you belong to?
Elea: Mine is Falla Almassera, which is where my grandparents live. My mother lived there when she was little and that’s why I go to that one. My cousin is also from that falla and this year she is their Fallera Mayor, and I am the Fallera Mayor at school!
Arnau: I am at Falla Isabel la Católica in Valencia because my mother wanted me to go with my cousin Marta and my cousin Álvaro, who are also falleros there. We have the same group of friends.
Did you expect for your name to be drawn?
Elea: I was convinced I wouldn't be because there were a lot of girls participating in the draw and you always think it will be someone else, but I was so excited.
Arnau: I thought I had a chance but I knew it was difficult, and in the end, it’s just luck! But as soon as I heard my name, I felt super proud and super happy at the same time.
What do you like most about the fallas?
Elea: My falla's Presentation is what excites me the most because you can show off your dress. It is very moving because they put the sash on you and give you a bouquet and sweets.
Arnau: What I like most is setting off firecrackers, especially the falleros and picos de oro; I also find the Ofrenda very emotional because I go with many friends and my cousins and it is a way of showing respect to our Virgin.
What theme would you choose for your ideal falla?
Elea: I always like to have the opinion of my friends and family rather than doing things alone, but I would like to make a falla where the theme was festivals in general and many different celebrations were represented.
Arnau: Football! It would be really cool to make a falla of my friends and me playing football with professional players. We could invite the players to come and see it!
