Creativity and Community

By Sarah Taylor, teacher of Art in Caxton College in Valencia

Now in its third year, Drawtober has become a much-anticipated event at Caxton. Developed as a school-wide creative initiative, it takes inspiration from Inktober, the global drawing challenge introduced by artist Jake Parker in 2009 to promote positive drawing habits. Drawtober builds on this idea, offering a unique Caxton twist that celebrates creativity, imagination, and community through daily engagement with art.

Throughout October, both students and staff respond to daily themed prompts linked to the “One School, One Community” ethos and broader creative concepts designed to inspire original thinking. The focus is on creating a little and often, encouraging consistent artistic practice and the development of confidence, discipline, and imagination. This steady approach allows participants to explore ideas freely, experiment with different media and enjoy the process without concern for perfection.

Drawtober challenges the notion that drawing belongs only to those with traditional artistic skill. The initiative promotes the belief that drawing is for everyone, reflecting the diversity of contemporary art and its many forms of visual communication.

The experience also supports mental wellbeing, with regular creative activity shown to enhance focus, relaxation, and overall positivity.

At the end of October, selected works are recognised for their originality, creativity, and use of media, and displayed proudly on the ground floor.

Drawtober 2025 demonstrates how consistent creative practice can transform confidence, imagination, and community spirit. Each year Drawtober continues to grow, producing ever more remarkable outcomes. Well done to all who took part!
