Teaching Beyond the Textbook: My Experience at Caxton College English Camp

By Victoria Peña, Summer English Camp teacher

Teaching at Caxton College this summer has been such a rewarding experience. As a Primary 6 teacher, my goal has been to create a classroom where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and, most importantly, enjoying learning.

This summer, I designed a project called Around the World, where students ‘travel’ to a different country each week without leaving the classroom. We explore different cultures through reading, writing, research and creative activities, and at the end of the month pupils create their own travel magazine. It has been a lovely way to practise English while discovering that the world is much bigger, and much more interesting, than our classroom walls.

I’ll be honest: before the first day, I was a little nervous. Primary 6 students can sometimes have that ‘I’m too cool for this’ look, especially in the middle of their summer holidays. I wasn’t sure how excited they would be to spend their mornings at school. Luckily, they proved me wrong almost immediately.

It turns out they’re incredibly curious, full of ideas and much more competitive than I expected, especially if there’s a challenge involved. They’ve also reminded me that if you ask a question, someone will always have a very confident answer… whether it’s correct or not! And yes, they’ve become experts at finding facts online in record time.

One of the highlights has been watching the students take ownership of their work. Whether they’re writing articles, designing magazine pages, presenting information about a country or debating which food everyone absolutely has to try, they’ve shown creativity, teamwork and confidence every single day.

Summer school has reminded me that learning doesn’t have to look the same every day. Sometimes the best lessons happen because a student asks an unexpected question, someone makes the whole class laugh, or a discussion goes somewhere you never planned. Those are usually the moments everyone remembers and, if I’m honest, they’re my favourite ones too.
