The Importance of Early Acquisition of a Second Language

Early bilingual education is not just an academic advantage, but a valuable investment in a child’s future.

It's widely recognised that mastering a second language offers a range of advantages for personal and professional development in adulthood. But additionally, when we talk about bilingual education at an early age, numerous studies show a series of benefits for the child, both social and cognitive, that will strengthen their growth and development.

One of the most important aspects to consider regarding second language acquisition in young children is the plasticity of their brains, which helps them learn phonemes and pronunciation. For this reason, the earlier linguistic immersion begins, the better the learning outcomes will be. Crucial factors in this process are the quality of communicative interaction and the quantity of exposure to the second language.

Furthermore, play and interaction with other children and adults helps make learning immersive and meaningful, so the school environment is an ideal setting for language acquisition. In Baby Caxton we create learning situations and role-plays where we interact with our pupils so that they begin to use English in a natural and meaningful way, just as they do with their mother tongue.

In addition to all the benefits inherent in being bilingual, starting to learn another language before the age of 5 also provides a range of other advantages in terms of an individual’s cognitive and social development. Improved attention span, critical thinking and creativity are just some of the many aspects that acquiring a second language helps to develop. For all these reasons, our curriculum is based on learning topics that reflect our students' interests and encompass a wide variety of learning opportunities where children can choose what they want to work on – fine or gross motor skills, creativity, cognitive development, and/or their social skills – with constant support and interaction with a large team of professionals.

To conclude, in Baby Caxton we are aware that promoting the learning of a second language in the early years of life not only facilitates mastery of that language but also lays the foundations for the child’s overall development. This is why we work with dedication to offer the best bilingual education for our pupils.
