Making Our Library an Ideal Space

By Patricia O’Rourke, Librarian

Our aim is to encourage both students and staff to use the Library as much as possible by making it welcoming to everybody. After our reorganisation last summer, Secondary students were quick to make use of the comfortable new reading area, where they can relax and enjoy a good book, and sometimes, even teachers take a few minutes out of their busy day to read on one of the sofas!

Meanwhile, our Sixth Formers make the most of the Quiet Room in which to study or do coursework, with many of them regularly coming here first thing in the morning, or in free periods during the day.

We also rearranged the study tables, so that students and teachers can use them for activities such as break time Book Club, reading with small groups, or the Caxton Times newspaper meetings. Secondary teachers also hold their “Coffee Mornings” here, the idea being to encourage students to read novels or non-fiction books related to their curricular subjects.

On the Primary side of the Library, the littlest borrowers really love the Early Years area, where they can sit entranced as their teacher reads them a story, before choosing one of their favourite books to take home. The older Primary children also enjoy spending time in their own cosy reading area, while their teachers read to them or let them get started on the books they have chosen.

And finally, we couldn’t do this without the cooperation of our parents, who not only help to foster a love of reading in their own homes, but also continue to generously donate books that their children have outgrown. This year, we have received many books in excellent condition which have been very popular additions to our collection, so a big “thank you” goes to everyone who has donated books!
